Folk Diva Vikki Clayton is an iconic figure in the world of folk music, and is renowned for her
exceptional songwriting prowess and innovative guitar work that have redefined the genre. With a
career marked by poetic lyricism she is an outstanding performer well known for her work with
Fairport Convention Vikki Clayton’s contributions to folk music in the UK is nothing short of
extraordinary.
Folk diva Vikki Clayton first came to prominence with eight-piece electric folk band from England
named after an Albion Band track Ragged Heroes. The line-up comprised Jerry Sharpley (fiddle), Vikki
Clayton (vocals), Paul Gough (bass/vocals), Stephen Clayton (guitar/vocals), Paul Ogden
(piano/synthesizer), Johnny Tasker (drums), John Skrypniuk (guitar/vocals) and John Hart
(melodeon/whistle). Vikki Clayton went on to a solo career and guested with Fairport Convention.
When Vikki departed Ragged Heroes to pursue a solo career she released numerous critically
acclaimed solo albums. In 1987 she released “ Honour Tonked ”this was followed in 1991 with
Midsummer Cushion,then in 1994 what is looked on as her most successful album “ It Suits Me Well
- The Songs Of Sandy Denny “ this was followed by another really successful album in 1997 “ Movers
And Shakers” This was followed by “ Messenger in 2017 The most recent album was “Looking At The
Stars released in 2018 “ Vikki also recorded an album with. “ Carried Away in 1995 with Ric Sanders
of Fairport Convention fame and Fred Thelonious Baker of soft Machine. Recognised as a fine
interpreter of the late Sandy Denny's work - she was a regular in the so- called ‘ Sandy spot’ at
Fairport’s Cropredy Convention for years.. Vikki Clayton is now resident in New Zealand but returns
each year for her annual tour of Blighty . In 2026 she is extending the length of her UK stay to
hopefully include quite a few folk festivals. Vikki Clayton is loved respected and revered by folk
music fans across the world and as she says “I keep doing what I do best because I just love to sing
and folk music is what I think I do best”
