Hidden Lives Theatre will bring Beethoven: Edge of Silence to Henley-in-Arden Memorial Hall as part of the 2027 Henley Arts4All festival on Wednesday 21 July at 8.30pm.

Written and performed by Birmingham actor Mike Venables, the production steps behind the familiar image of the formidable musical genius to reveal a volatile, vulnerable and fiercely determined man. It follows Beethoven through ambition, turbulent relationships and devastating deafness, asking how a composer whose life depended upon sound could continue when silence began to close in. Live piano, performed by Rebecca Weston, is woven through the drama rather than added as a conventional concert accompaniment. The music creates the emotional landscape of Beethoven's memories and gives audiences the opportunity to encounter the man and his work together in one intimate theatrical experience. “I did not want to present Beethoven as a distant marble bust,” says Venables. “The play explores the human being behind the legend: brilliant, difficult, funny, wounded and still determined to create extraordinary music.” The production began at Midlands Arts Centre in Birmingham before appearing at the West Midlands Fringe. Its compact staging combines storytelling, character work and live music, bringing Beethoven’s private world close to the audience.
